Stripercoast Surfcasters Club Urges Public Comment On Menhaden Addendum V
By Jacob Freeman
Dated: Oct 20, 2011
In an effort to help in communicating to the ASMFC our concern over the chronic overfishing of Atlantic Menhaden, Stripercoast Surfcasters Club urges fishermen coastwide to send in public comment on the ASMFC's Addendum V to the Atlantic Menhaden Fisheries Management Plan.
Menhaden (also known as bunker or pogies), arguably one of the most important fish on the east coast, have been over fished in 32 of the last 54 years, and the menhaden population has declined by at least 88% in the last 3 decades.
It is time for the ASMFC to take a proactive approach to the management of this fishery and uphold its mission statement of achieving "Healthy, self-sustaining populations for all Atlantic Coast fish species, or successful restoration well in progress, by the year 2015." and curb the over harvest of this important forage fish.
The public comment period on this Addendum to reduce Atlantic Menhaden Harvest is open until 5pm on November 2, 2011. PLEASE take a moment to send in your support of harvest reduction and stricter management measures!!

Stripercoast Surfcasters Club 4th Annual Montauk Shootout
By Jacob Freeman
Dated: Sept 1, 2011
Stripercoast Surfcasters Club members from many states along the east coast will gather in Montauk, NY on October 1 - October 2, 2011, for a weekend of surfcasting, skishing, and Catch and Release competition. Registration for members and potential members begins at 9am on October 1st with the final tallies being taken at 9 am on October 2nd. There will be a BBQ on Sunday that all are welcome to attend. This will all happen in the Lower Lot at Montauk Point State Park, rain or shine.
In pursuit of striped bass, club members will join together in the club's fourth annual gathering at Montauk, a location many regard as the surfcasting capital of the world. Potential new members of the club will also be interviewed for membership consideration.
Founded in 2008, Stripercoast Surfcasters Club is a 501(c)7 non profit organization, and is geared toward the more conservation minded striped bass surfcaster. With growing state chapters along the eastern seaboard, the Club has a strong focus on conservation, promotion of game fish status for striped bass, coastal access rights, participating in and hosting Catch & Release tournaments, and basically fishing their tails off as often as possible.
Membership is for those who are serious in their pursuit and conservation of Striped Bass. The club does not take the place of your local surfcasting club; you can still belong to your local club. Instead, as a National club, being a part of Stripercoast Surfcasters Club broadens your horizons beyond your own local scene, allowing you to branch out and giving you an edge when you travel beyond your home turf and support on local surfcasting issues. For members of Stripercoast, surfcasting is a way of life and a passion.
Anyone interested in becoming a member of this emerging force in the surfcasting community, is invited to join the group for the weekend to "test the waters" and see if you have what it takes to be a Stripercoast Surfcaster!
